Review Vampires

Review – From Dusk till Dawn (1996)

Still a riot 22 years on, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s From Dusk till Dawn has kept its bite and is an enjoyable vampire/crime flick with George Clooney as sexy as he’s ever been. That faux neck tattoo is roarrrrrrrrrrr.

Bank robber brothers Seth and Richie Gecko (Clooney and Tarantino) are on the run and on their way to Mexico. They hijack a RV from Harvey Keitel’s pastor Jacob Fuller – a pastor who is doubting his faith following the death of his wife; he’s on holiday with his two teenage kids Scott (Ernest Liu) and Katherine (Juliette Lewis). The Geckos’ force them to drive over the border, to a rendezvous point – a strip club in the desert called the Titty Twister. As it’s open until dawn, they’ll use the place to wait out to meet their contact Carlos (Cheech Marin).

The Titty Twister turns out to be kind of like the Mos Eisley Cantina in Star Wars but with more boobies. This is where bad ass bikers and truckers hang out, and if you look the wrong way you get into a fight. The Geckos’ assert their authority with some clever help from Jacob…and then they get caught in the mother of all lock-ins.

For those who went into the movie theatres not knowing this was a horror flick, well THAT was one heck of a surprise. The prosthetics may look really dated now – like Deadites essentially – and there’s no real scares, but when things start to get toothy ruthie we’re in for a lot of fun. A vampire band play a human guitar made out of body parts FFS and there’s a biker named Sex Machine (Tom Savini). What else do you want?
