Featuring a stellar cast, the 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is classy, arty and features one of the most terrifying endings of sci-fi/horror.
Alien creatures decide to take over Earth as their planet is dying. Landing in San Francisco, they fall on to plant leaves and form pods – which then bloom into pretty flowers. Humans then pick the pretty flowers and aliens take them over. Spouses start to report that their husbands/wives are not themselves. Body snatching is a happening.
Donald Sutherland stars as Dr Matthew Bennell, a health inspector who catches on to what is going on and leads the way to trying to figure out how to get away from the pods with a young Jeff Goldblum (being maximum groovy Goldblum) and a suave Leonard Nimoy. It’s wonderfully shot and a brilliant remake that truly terrifies. Turns out, a hybrid alien dog with a man’s face is still very alarming 40 years on.
GORE RATING: 2/5
Watch it for: Remakes aren’t often better than the originals. This one stands up
Watch out for: That ending. Stuff of nightmares
