31 Days of Streaming Halloween – Day 15 – The Raven (1963)

The first appearance of Vincent Price on our #Shocktober month, and this is a brilliant tale produced and directed by the legendary Roger Corman. Price plays Dr. Erasmus Craven (strong name, rhymes with raven) who is mourning the death of his wife. One night he is visited by a mysterious raven, who is in fact a transformed wizard called Dr. Bedlo (Peter Lorre). They brew up a nice little potion to return Dr. Bedlo to his human self and set about plotting revenge against the evil Dr. Scarabus (Boris Karloff – hecka yeah) who changed Bedlo, and for Craven to find his wife’s ghost.

With its tongue firmly in its cheek, The Raven isn’t scary but it’s quite comedic. There’s some cool magic and it’s all done very OTT. And with the horror greats of Price and Karloff – AND a young Jack Nicholson – it’s a delight to watch.

RATING: 6/10
Watch it for: Vincent Price being FABULOUS as usual
Watch out for: The magic duel between Price and Karloff

Next up…Wicked Stepmother (1989)
