Cabin in the woods Forests Ghosts Japan Review Supernatural The Bad Place

31 Days of Streaming Halloween – Day 22 – The Forest (2016)

We watched a thought provoking Vice documentary about the Aokigahara Forest in Japan – a notorious spot for suicide – so came into this movie with knowledge of the area and what they may be looking to do with this film.

It’s an effective horror, with Natalie Dormer standing out as our protagonist Sara Price. She travels to the Forest after receiving a call from Japanese police telling her that her twin sister is most probably dead after she was seen going in there.

Sara immediately goes there too, and whilst staying in a local hotel meets a journalist called Aiden (Taylor Kinney) who agrees to accompany her in to the Forest with local guide Michi (Yukiyoshi Ozawa). Once there, the three experience a series of horrors which are a bit Blair Witch and well, a bit Japanese horror movie like Ringu or The Grudge.

There’s some proper scares and a truly WTF ending. We found it chilling and easy to watch, but not the most innovative or captivating horror. Worth checking out though.
