31 Days of Streaming Halloween – Day 25 – Child’s Play (1988)

We’re back into killer dolls territory today as Day 25’s movie is Child’s Play. It’s a controversial movie franchise as it was linked to the horrific murder of James Bulger in 1993 and on this film’s initial release, protestors campaigned outside MGM’s offices calling for it to be banned as it would incite violence in children.

When serial killer Charles Lee Ray is fatally shot in a toy shop, he transfers his soul into a ‘Good Guys’ doll, aka Chucky. He is purchased the next day by Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks) for her son Andy’s (Alex Vincent) birthday. Chucky starts to kill people and the blame is put on to Andy, with him ending up in a psychiatric hospital. Karen soon realises that Andy wasn’t lying when Chucky attacks her.

It’s a hit horror schlock franchise which holds its merits; Chucky is an iconic character of the genre and the movie is easy to watch with comedic moments. It all feels a bit vintage now but is a good choice for this Halloween. We’ll do another of the franchise tomorrow as we’re gluttons for punishment.

RATING: 6/10
Watch it for: Chucky. A horror character still popular today
Watch out for: Chucky lets rip at Karen

Next up…Curse of Chucky (2013)
