A visually stunning treat, It Follows is a solid contemporary horror movie which has some genuine scary moments. Maika Monroe is Jamie, a college student who unfortunately ‘catches’ a curse after she has sex; she will be followed by an entity that can take the form of anyone. If it catches you, it will kill you.
Although the entity walks really, really slowly, it’s a persistent little bugger that doesn’t give up. This leads to some fantastic shots of Jamie – and her friends who also ‘catch’ the viral entity – being stalked in the background, like the cinematography of the original Halloween. Director David Robert Mitchell used wide-angle lenses to capture this expansive look, and it works beautifully. You’ll be looking in every corner to see where the entity and threat is coming from, it’s really unsettling.
With the entity taking any form, you also don’t know who is real and who could be the killer. There’s a constant peril and it’ll have you jumping all over the place.
